The Verbs Ser and Estar

Home - Blog Detail

Learning a language means learning a philosophy of life—another way of understanding the world.
In English, everything is expressed with the verb “to be,” but in Spanish we have ser and estar.

Ser represents who you are—your essence.
Estar represents how you feel—your temporary state.

In other words, Spanish separates identity from momentary experience.

For example:
• “Soy aburrida” means I’m a boring person—that’s my personality, I bore everyone.
• “Estoy aburrida” means I’m bored right now—a temporary feeling caused by something else.

When a student finally understands this difference, we applaud them—because they’ve grasped the true essence of the language. And that fills us with joy.

At our Spanish school, we don’t just teach grammar.
We share our way of seeing life—with Latin passion and heart.

So the next time you hear someone say “ESTOY ABURRIDA,” you’ll know it means something very different from “SOY ABURRIDA.”

Come and be part of our vibrant community—both in person and online—
and learn much more than just a language!
